Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept GMT Tourbillon Review 2001: Richard Mille launches his first timepiece creating a new trend in watchmaking. At the origin of his venture a bold vision: applying to watches the techniques and the materials employed in the most innovative sectors, such as in F1 racing cars or airplanes.
From the very beginning, Richard Mille watches were born of experimental research on high-tech materials with a distinctive design to reinforce the idea of performance. In fact, one of the brand’s first slogans was: "a racing machine on the wrist".But, at the same time, Richard Mille demonstrated great respect for the Swiss tradition of fine watchmaking, creating extremely complex mechanical movements, assembled and finished by hand.Born in Draguignan, France in 1951, Richard started his career in the watchmaking industry in 1974 and had management roles in various watch brands then becoming, in the early 1990s, managing director (and shareholder) of the watch division of renowned French jewellery firm Mauboussin.It was in these years that Richard Mille met Giulio Papi, one of the most talented watchmaker of our times and Director of Research and Development at Audemars Piguet Renaud et Papi (APR&P), Audemars Piguet's high-end watch making division.In 1999, Richard Mille decided to create his personal brand of luxury watches with the objective to break the traditional codes related to high-end watches, often associated to a baroque style and precious materials like gold and platinum.
His extensive experience and numerous contacts in the industry helped him to establish active collaborations with some of the best manufacturers of movements and components in Switzerland.“I have always been obsessed with mechanical devices and I love to discover new universes,” said Mr. Mille, 67. “My passions are, equally, cars, watches and airplanes.”
A love of all things mechanical is what pushed the French-born Mr. Mille, then a luxury industry executive, to found his namesake Swiss watch brand in 1999. Cheap Richard Mille Automatic RM 35-02 RAFAEL NADAL Review Richard Mille’s latest is one for the ladies: The RM 71-01 Automatic Tourbillon Talisman. While the watch is a dazzling, bejeweled timepiece, it is as well a technical first for Mille.
Starting off with the case of the RM 037, the challenge the brand set out for itself, was to create an automatic tourbillon movement that would fit within the narrow real estate of the case and at the same time allow room for a form of creative expression on the dial.The movement that Richard Mille’s come up with, therefore, is the brand’s first completely in-house developed automatic tourbillon movement, the Calibre CRMT1. Made largely out of grade 5 titanium, the movement is ultra-light and compact, while still offering the typical robustness that Richard Mille’s calibers boast; even at just 6.2 millimeters thickness and 8 grams in weight.Essentially, what you see as the dial is a miniature piece of artwork that brings together three varied crafts: jewelry, dial making and watchmaking. Using a red gold surface, no thicker than 0.9 millimeters, mother-of-pearl, onyx and diamonds are used to depict masks, tiaras or even ritual artefacts that are either art deco or tribal art inspired. In this manner, ten dial variations were created, each in just five examples.
To build this cable suspended movement, the RM team used two separate baseplates. The first is fixed to the sapphire glass case to support the tensioner mechanism. The second is connected to the first baseplate through multiple cables and incorporates the wheels that comprise the movement as well as the winding mechanism. This second baseplate rests on two braided steel cables that come in at just 0.27 mm in diameter. The two cables have a 10-pulley system that is leveraged by four tensioners. The RM team has to make sure that there is an even distribution throughout the intricate pulley system, while the grade 5 titanium used in the baseplate and bridges adds a stiffness that encourages ultimate shock protection. To create the sapphire glass case, Richard Mille collaborated with Stettler, a renowned sapphire specialist. Inspired by the use of laminated glass in the automotive world, Stettler and RM developed a system of laying down two sheets of sapphire glass that are separated by a thin Polyvinyl film that is then covered in anti-reflective and UV coating. The case is machined in Carbon TPT, which is a patented structure that has been described as “virtually indestructible.” What’s most noticeable about the case, however, is its Damascene design that recalls Damascus steel, used centuries ago to create “virtually-indestructible” blades.When you think of Sly Stallone you can’t help but think; butch, resourceful and a little…well, out of proportion. Housed in a bulky 50mm round case, the manual-wind movement is certainly a technical achievement. Combining a tourbillon, an uber-efficient ‘competition’ chronograph, 24 hour display (essential if deprived without light in the depths of prison for example) and a 70 hour power reserve, it’s a piece of high-horology in its own right.The real showpiece however has to be the interchangeable, bayonet fix bezels which enable the wearer to switch between a traditional compass or a more standard bi-directional bezel. The compass attachment, which can also be removed and used separately, is coated in diamond like carbon (DLC) and thanks to its anti-reflective treatment and anti-magnetic coating in the sapphire, ensures the accuracy of its readings.Richard Mille established his eponymous brand in 1999 with the backing of Audemars Piguet and its legendary development company, Renaud et Papi. The mission was to push high-end, hand-made watchmaking to the very limits of technical innovation.
